A little known related fact is that some of those very same chimps later went on to form 20th Century Chimp Film Corporation, and filmed the Passion of Chimpumbo as a tribute to their god. Due to their strong iconoclasm and belief that Chimpumbo should not be represented or recorded in any visual form, the actor playing the God of the Forest had to do so with a sack over his head.
Whilst a commercial hit, the 20th Century Chimp ultimately believed the film to be a failure: With a generation of young chimps growing up believing that their deity was a large brown bag with poor eyesight, no sense of direction and a tenancy to bump into random objects. This is where common the Chimp expression for clumsiness, ‘doing a pumbo,’ originated.
